Marc Anthony has been playing his live shows on Valentine’s Day for years and this year he played two nights – one on the 14th in New Jersey and on the 15th in his hometown, New York.

For fans of Salsa music, New York City is the birthplace of Salsa and was home to Fania Records. Marc Anthony owns New York when he comes to town, as did the greats in Salsa music – Fania Allstars, Willie Colon, Oscar Deleon, and the Voice of Salsa, Hector Lavoe. Many fans know Anthony for his music as well as acting roles in movies like Hackers, Man on Fire and his amazing performance of the man many compare him to – Hector Lavoe in El Cantante.

Selling out the 18,000 seat venue, the crowd was filled with Nuyoricans and you could feel the electricity in the air.
Playing for the first time “in the round” setting allowed the band to walk on stage from the entrance way. As the band played, the crowd turned their eyes towards the same entrance. Anthony made his way through the crowd like a star as cameras flashed everywhere.

Opening with the only English song of the night, I Need to Know, it flowed into the emotionally charged song, Y Hubo Alguien. During Hasta Ayer, there was a violin solo that had the crowd cheering and singing along.

Anthony slowed things down a bit as he ripped into your soul and left your heart open with, Y Cómo Es El. You could feel the torture in his lyrics as he told the crowd how hard that song is to sing for many reasons, as it was announced days before of his split with his recent girlfriend.

This crowd was one of the loudest I have heard in many years and Anthony was very thankful as he shared stories and continued with songs, Ahora Quien and El Ultimo Beso. Flags from Puerto Rico were in the crowd and when the Hector Lavoe’s classic, Mi Gente was being sung, the crowd danced along.

Playing for over 1 ½ hours, he poured every ounce of himself on the stage and even got on his knees to kiss the stage, showing his appreciation for New York’s energy tonight. He ended the night with the single off his new album 3.0, Vivir Mi Vida to end a night too soon for many.

While this tour is only in a few more days in other countries, it is for sure worth seeing and hoping this will extend into the year, with more USA dates and some added songs to an already amazing set list.

Marc Anthony also hosted a charity event in New York City for his, “Maestro Cares Foundation.” This event assists disadvantaged children in Latin America and is an endeavor with Henry Cardenas.
